The Grand-Combin
4.314 m
The whole western part of the Valais is marked by the presence of that giant. It's the highest mountain between the Mont Blanc and the Dent Blanche. Standing alone in complete isolation, its crown is overlooking the nearby mountains. Only experienced climbers can take the risk to conquer it. Unexperienced climbers who dare to challenge its majesty are often killed by seracs coming off one of its faces.

Some history

The four first groups of alpinists who dared to challenge it first reached the top of the so called Aiguille du Croissant (4.260 m), which was conquered for the first time by the two local guides Maurice Fellay and Jouvence Bruchez on July the 20th 1857, and later by the same guides accompanying Sir William Mathews and Ausguste Simond on August the 19th of the same year. It was only the fifth group of climbers, to which Charles Emmanuel and Gaspard Balleys and Basile Dorsaz belonged , who managed to reach its highest point: the so called Combin de Grafeneire on July the 30st 1859. Finally, the first ski ascent took place on March the 23th 1916 from the cabane Panossière and was achieved by M. Choudens and the local guide Maurice Crettex.
